Saffron flowers are traditionally harvested manually, which requires a great deal of skill and patience. The flowers must be harvested at the right time to ensure the\u00a0#saffron<\/a>\u00a0#quality<\/a>, and the\u00a0#stigmas<\/a>\u00a0must be handled carefully to avoid damaging them.<\/p>\n

About seven to ten days after the first irrigation, around mid-October to mid-November in Iran, saffron flowers start to appear daily. The flowers emerge gradually within a 15-20 day period. The height of the flowers from the soil surface varies from 20 to 120 mm, and reaches 50-160 mm above the petals. The presence of leaves and the low height of the blooms from the soil surface, which might occur when the first irrigation is postponed, are the main obstacles to using\u00a0#machines<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0#harvesting<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The required\u00a0#labor<\/a>\u00a0for harvesting one hectare of saffron depends on the flower density per unit area. Flowering is very limited in the first year, and it increases gradually to reach its maximum in the third and fourth years. Although the flowering period of a saffron field is 15-20 days long, the peak flowering period lasts no more than 35 days.<\/p>\n

In the manual method, the growers harvest flowers in the early morning on a daily basis because the weather is cooler and the flowers are just buds. It is much easier and faster to harvest saffron buds because they have a longer storage life and need less space to maintain. Late-harvested and full-blown flowers should be rapidly prepared for separation of stigmas, whereas buds can be stored and wait for 2-4 days under cool conditions and away from sunlight.<\/p>\n
